I can compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events
in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., how characters interact).
I can pose and respond to specific questions by making comments that contribute to the discussion and elaborate on the remarks of others.
LEARNING ACTIVITIES AND LINKS:
1. Choose a character introduced in Chapter 1 and create a wordle using a variety of words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc) that describe the character's personality and actions.
Here is an example of a wordle made using the book and all the characters.
2. You will keep a running list of vocabulary words with definitions in your journal or in Google Docs throughout the unit. Use this online dictionary to look up the meanings for the words. You will have a vocabulary quiz at the end of the module.
3. You will read Chapters 2-3 and complete the study guide questions to prepare for the Comprehension Quiz at the end of the module. You may work with your assigned partner.
4. Review the Good Discussions handout and rubric. You will participate in the following discussion topic on Schoologyand respond to one peer.
Your Topic:
Tolkien says in this chapter that “It is a strange thing, but things that are good to have and days that are good to spend are soon told about, and not much to listen to; while things that are uncomfortable, palpitating, and even gruesome, may make a good tale, and take a deal of telling away.” (page 57). What does this quote mean, and do you agree? Why or why not?
